Sun, 13 September 2009 The Gamma Quadrant endures Rumplestiltskin, fat baseball players and submissive science officers on DS9 this week. We try to answer the question: are humans really as awesome as Star Trek says they are? For the second time, DS9 has inspired us to add a new word to our vocabulary: stupnanigans. I think that every incarnation of Star Trek used this plot device. Remember Alice's rabbit in the original? The strafing fighter plane? This time they just didn't try. I want to know why the emus weren't invited to the meetings.
On a different note, have you considered going to a twice per week format? At this rate you will finish DS9 on September 30, 2012. I might be dead by the time you get to Voyager :)
Best,
Tom

STUPNANIGANS! Love it! Yes...not quite "Move Along Home"...but close. I agree with you all that the concept was worthy...but not well realized. Seth's point is well-taken...a general exploration of human imagination seemed to be the "alien's" interest...but their motivation for such an exploration was not made clear...which left me uninterested.
Maybe this episode is a "Farpoint" or All Good Things..." lite...testing/pushing humans (or humanoids) to see if they can find solutions by expanding their minds to ponder broader possibilities. That...or humans can simple do away with their problems by just not thinking about them. ;)
Yes, Valerie...the "alien" praise of the specialness of human imagination was too overt. But...give me that old time Star Trek human uniqueness cheerleading! Show me I have something special...and inspire me to aspire to the better angels of my nature...even when the harsh realities of life come calling. I need it...and I'll take it...even from Buck Bokai.

Hey guys, another great show and stupnanigans........I loved it!
I agree with you guys that it kind of threw me off when Bashir didn’t immediately give in to the "submissive" Dax and I just wanted to offer a quick theory as to why Bashir reacted the way he did.
We all agree that the guy has a huge ego and that part of him believes that he'll get her to come around eventually with his charm and tantalizing tales of medical school final exams. But he wants it to happen his way on his terms. I think he likes the seduction game and the pursuit because it’s fun for him and it’s a huge boost to his ego when he does finally overcome.
So when this new Dax shows up all ready to get going, he’s thrown off his game because he hadn’t really had the chance to woo her and the chase is over before it really started. And we all know it’s no fun when that happens, lol!
What it comes down to is that when she didn’t want him, he was all about her and when she finally showed some interest, it wasn’t any fun for him. Just typical human behavior, we all want what we can’t have.
And to Tom, wow, that is a long time to wait until the end of the series...maybe the 2-episode format is a good idea, it would certainly make getting these from my library (3 day rental) a lot easier. But I'm sure these guys have other things to do besides dedicating 4+ hours a week to DS9.......right? If not, bring on more of the DS9 love, lol!

I would also love to hear two per week, but I think that might be a little overwhelming for the crew. It takes time to view the episodes and to do the homework needed to maintain an interesting discussion, so I won't be surprised if it stays at one per week. It would be wonderful to indulge my DS9 love twice a week, but beggars can't be choosers, and I am just hoping that they make it through the entire series. It is a huge commitment, and a long haul. Good luck Gamma Quadrant crew, and if you should ever decide to go to two per week, I'll invite you all over to play with my costumes!! ;)

Thank you all for the kind words and great insights. Our listeners are a really intelligent bunch. Might I just also say thanks for keeping things civil here on the comments, you guys are great.
Well, I guess since there seems to be a lot of talk here about the two podcasts a week idea that you deserve a response at least. Honestly I for one would love to post two a week. Unfortunately Thot Pran is correct. A lot goes into a show. We watch, research, record, edit and somewhere in there try to have normal lives. Not to say that there will NEVER be two in any given week (Convention episode).
Do not fret, we intend to see this to the end...and even beyond. Don't worry about 2012 and the apocalypse. Does anyone remember Y2K ?

Yeah, we spend a lot of time prepping for the show and I know that Seth spends a lot of time editing. Not that I'm complaining about it or anything, I think I can speak for the three of us when I say it's time well spent. I'm just bummed that this means we can't play dress-up with Thot Pran.
I can see it now...September 30, 2012...Valerie, Seth, and Ryan host the Nostradamas/Mayan/I-Ching/Pa Raith Apocalypse Party somewhere on the outskirts of Grover's Mills, NJ...where everyone drinks blood wine, root beer, and kanar...plays dress up with Thot Pran...watches the final episode of DS9...and waxes DS9 with the fabulous threesome as they record the final podcast! Marking my calendar now!!! :)
