This week on the Gamma Quadrant we discuss The Storyteller. In this episode, we discover that young love on DS9 includes pranks with oatmeal. We also find out that red is not O’Brian’s color, and green is not Jake’s color.

    Hey guys, another good podcast.
You guys tend to refer to Jake and Nog together as "the child actors" of the show. So just in case you were unaware, I thought I'd mention that Aron Eisenberg was actually 24 years old when he began playing Nog. According to Memory Alpha, he underwent a kidney transplant as a teen which stunted his growth, which is why he appears younger than he is. I always thought he did an excellent job as Nog. He's also got a good role as a young Kazon in an episode of Voyager.

Great podcast! Can't say I enjoyed the episode as much as you, Ryan. However, I agree with you all that it was well-written and hilariously well-played...to be enjoyed but not over-thought. But...my beef...where Kai Opaka gave Bajoran spirituality needed credibility in "Battle Lines"..."The Storyteller" kicked that notion back a few blocks. Sure, creating a menacing external threat to motivate/scare the populace toward peaceful coexistence and unity worked well for the Sirah way back when. (As in "The Man Who Would Be King" or, more directly, in the "Watchmen" graphic novel and film.) But how long will these villagers forgo any intellectual curiousity for their seemingly blind spirituality? No Rorschach in that village...and it seems Kai Opaka never made it to that part of Bajor. The new Sirah and the young Varis seemed to make the mind move from "kid" to "leader"...but the Bajoran villagers will need a few more years. Maybe some of these Bajorans are religious nuts after all! Yep...I'm over-thinking it. BTW - Gotta admit that I loved Jake's lime-y/blue-y fabric blend outfit!

I completely agree with Greg. Nog was a fantastic supporting cast member and was very well acted by Aron. It is too bad that his growth was so stunted, but I am thankful that he was able to put his physical limitation to good use on Star Trek. I have one of his costumes and it almost fits my nine-year old daughter!
I am also in agreement on the point AB makes about the depth of convictions towards the Bajoran faith witnessed by Opaka and Kira. This gave a meaningful sense to Bajoran spirituality as a whole, and "The Storyteller" simplified the faith too much making it seem much more child-like. I wish we had the chance to see Hovath grow into his spiritual shoes and then lead the people to defeat the Dal'Rok, rather than Julian urging him up to bail out O'Brien. It felt like the Sirah's method of teaching his apprentice were questionable at best. Maybe he spent too much time with his "gifts" and not enough time with Hovath! ;)
