Sun, 14 June 2009 The Gamma Quadrant discusses Past Prologue. We rejoice in Garak's introduction onto the show, and lament that the episode centers around Kira. We also take a detour to examine DS9 fashions and Kira's new hairstyle. Comments[2] |
I don't know guys. It's listenable, edited, you guys are conversational without being "inside", but... there's not much that's insightful. Aside from some interesting fashion choices I haven't considered before, it really is the definition of superficial. You go to the effort to explain the origin of the title, but when it comes to talking about why it was chosen or how it related, no one seems too interested in exploring some theories. You guys seem to just give non-specific vague explanations about your feelings about certain scenes but not much analysis follows. None of your acting/writing criticisms offer an alternative and more importantly, an argument why that alternative would be an improvement.
Past Prologue is not an outstanding episode for various reasons, but your distaste for Kira seems unrooted in anything but vague feelings. The character is supposed to be a former fanatical terrorist, so criticism of "flighty" and "emotional" don't ring for me. She's not Starfleet and uncomfortable in a role she does not know, but it almost seems like you guys are criticizing her for not being a more typical Starfleet character, ala, Dax. I would have liked to have heard more reasonings as to why Kira is poorly acting/poorly written/etc.
Overall I think that's probably the issue with this podcast, it's a friendly rehash without much interest in analysis. When you bring up custom design choices and mention that how they look good for slightly overweight men but not for fit women, don't stop there. Go beyond just the obvious observations and dare to posit some theories. It's Star Trek after all, and that's what's fun about being a fan. If one of you states that they don't like when the episodes get "political", a central thread in DS9, spend more time discussing why.
Maybe if you went into each episode with something. Make rewatching an episode more than being just leisure time. The next ep "A Man Alone" also is a bit mediocre and feels like the preset character ep for Odo, but go in with some questions, like what is Odo's idea of justice? What kind of relationship does he have with the Bajoran people? Also, interesting is how character evolve over the course of a show and what character traits might be intentional progression as opposed to writer's convenience. Rom is very different in the first season from later seasons. Is Rom's change something that adds to DS9's story, or is it simply a fault. Does knowing about Bashir's genetic tailoring in childhood revealed later alter the perception of the character before? For good or bad? and most importantly, why?
Anyway, just thought I'd write since I listened and no one else was commenting. Doing a project like this without feedback can be difficult.
